About the Project

In March 2003, three U.S. acupuncturists initiated a two-week training program in Kampala, Uganda, at the KISWA Health Centre, targeting HIV+ patients. This marked the inaugural effort of the PanAfrican Acupuncture Project (PAAP), which later evolved into the Global Acupuncture Project (GAP). GAP aims to empower African communities by training local healthcare providers, including midwives, physiotherapists, and doctors, in simple and effective acupuncture techniques to alleviate symptoms of HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB, and other ailments. A comprehensive manual, explaining acupuncture theory and techniques, forms the backbone of the project, enabling sustainable care delivery. Licensed acupuncturists are trained to use and teach this manual, conducting sessions in target communities across Africa and maintaining ongoing support through direct contact and online channels.

The Global Acupuncture Project, a nonprofit corporation that has been working in Uganda since 2003 and Mexico since 2013, promotes the adoption and use of acupuncture to reduce pain and suffering, improve quality of life, and help to instill a greater sense of hope. The core approach is to train healthcare providers how to use a simple, effective form of acupuncture and integrate it into the healcare facilities where they work.
In Uganda, GAP has coordinated with the Ministry of Health and provided trainings in government healthcare facilities in more than 10 districts, including Kisoro, Ibanda, Isingiro, Kyotera, Lyantonde, Mbarara, Masaka, Mukono, Mbale, and Luwero. GAP has now trained and certified as Acupuncture Protocol Specialists (APS’s) more than 300 providers who now provide acupuncture in hospitals and health centers. They are very enthuiastic about and committed to acupuncture. This enthusiasm and commitment, and the Trainees’ feeling of being unique in their own comunities, is fueled by the many positive repoprts from their patients.
On The Global Acupuncture Project has also visited Trainees where they practice to provide ongoing support and supervision and to enrich their skills and understanding of acupuncture. In addition, we work with the Trainees to ensure better integration of acupuncture into their facilities and the overall Ugandan healthcare system.

Become a Trainer

Are you a compassionate, generous acupuncturist or a student intern at an accredited college? Do you want to spend a rewarding and meaningful one to two weeks in Africa or Mexico? Would you like to teach others how to use acupuncture to relieve pain and suffering? We want to hear from you!

We are looking for qualified individuals who want to travel to Africa or Mexico to be Trainers and share their knowledge, skills, and passion

The training methods used by the Project involve didactic learning and close supervision. Teams of four to six travel each time and always include an experienced Trainer. Trainings often include visiting the Trainees’ clinics, which serves as an excellent opportunity for you to learn about healthcare in Africa or Mexico. Additional time can be spent in Uganda to practice in a village clinic.

All applicants are screened to ensure good fit and skills. If you are accepted, we will provide as much help and training as you need for you to feel comfortable with the Project’s material and teaching methods.

Trainers are responsible for raising funds to cover the cost of their airfare to the host country plus the program fee, which covers the cost of in-country lodging, travel, breakfast and lunch and a portion of the training cost. For details about the fees, please contact the home office (info@globalacupuncture.org). Participation in activities before or following scheduled work in the host country will incur additional costs. GAP will provide informational materials about the project and consultation to help make sure your fundraising efforts are successful.

How You Can Help

Your support is urgently needed to continue and expand the Project.
Our program in Uganda and Mexico, where we have trained 350 local health providers, has been so successful that we have been asked to expand into Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia. We have also sent teams to Mexico to provide disaster relief and to address the trauma experienced by those affected by the earthquakes.
The Global Acupuncture Project relies on the power and commitment of volunteers. As such, the funds we raise directly support the trainings. Every dollar contributed is used to organize and conduct trainings, purchase needles and other acupuncture supplies, and help us to expand the program to other regions and countries within Africa and Latin America. Your support is vitally needed. Please respond today!
